Indian Railways is all set to tighten baggage regulations for passengers, bringing them closer to the standards usually seen in air travel. Under the new system, luggage will be weighed at electronic counters in key stations, and those who exceed the permitted limit or carry oversized bags may be charged extra. The move is aimed at improving efficiency, ensuring comfort for passengers, and reducing inconvenience during long journeys.
The new rules will vary according to travel class. AC First Class passengers will be permitted up to 70 kilograms of luggage, AC Two Tier up to 50 kilograms, AC Three Tier and Sleeper Class up to 40 kilograms, while General Class passengers will be allowed up to 35 kilograms. Even if bags fall within these limits, bulky items that obstruct compartments may attract penalties.
Electronic weighing machines are being installed at major stations to check compliance. Reports suggest that the initial rollout will focus on the North Central Railway zone, covering stations like Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, and Etawah.
Passengers at these locations will only be allowed platform access after their luggage is cleared under the new rules. Travellers are advised to pack light, arrive early, and prepare for additional checks before boarding.
Alongside the luggage reforms, Indian Railways is also working on upgrading the travel experience with premium single-brand retail outlets at select stations. These stores will sell clothing, footwear, electronics, and travel accessories, giving stations a more modern and airport-like feel. Officials believe the initiative will not only make journeys smoother but also generate additional revenue while giving passengers more choices during waiting time.
The stricter luggage rules mark a significant change in the way passengers prepare for train travel in India. As the rollout expands, it is expected to bring more order and discipline, helping ensure smoother journeys for everyone.
