Egypt is introducing a major change to how international visitors enter the country. Starting mid June, a pilot version of a new visa on arrival system will begin operating at Cairo International Airport. This move is designed to reduce long queues, eliminate paperwork, and create a smoother experience for travellers.

At the heart of this system are self service kiosks placed inside the airport terminals, along with a mobile app that enables travellers to apply for emergency visas on the spot. Visitors will be able to scan a QR code and make digital payments without dealing with physical forms or cash. The result is faster processing and more convenience for people coming from across the globe.

Sherif Fathy, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, confirmed that this new system is part of a broader effort to modernise tourism infrastructure. He emphasised that the use of digital tools will help the country offer a more efficient and welcoming arrival experience. The project will be closely observed at Cairo International Airport before being extended to other locations across Egypt.

The timing is significant. Cairo International Airport is the busiest entry point into the country, and this new approach is expected to benefit both tourists and immigration officers by reducing congestion. Officials hope this is just the beginning of a digital transformation in how Egypt manages its international arrivals.

This upgrade also aligns with Egypt’s larger goal to attract 30 million tourists each year by 2028. Under its Sustainable Tourism Strategy 2030, the country aims to reposition itself as a globally competitive destination that offers ease, comfort, and modern infrastructure.

In addition to this announcement, Egypt has extended its free 96 hour transit visa for another year. This means short term visitors passing through Egypt will continue to benefit from a visa free stopover until at least April 2026.

For Indian travellers, visa applications for Egypt still require a formal process through either VFS Global or the official e visa portal. Those choosing VFS Global must provide flight details, hotel bookings, and a full tour itinerary, with a processing time of around two weeks. The cost of a single entry visa is INR 2,700 while multiple entries cost INR 5,800.

On the other hand, applying through Egypt’s e visa website is often faster and more flexible. A single entry e visa costs USD 25 and a multiple entry visa costs USD 60. Both options require that the applicant’s passport is valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel.

While it remains to be seen if Indian citizens will be eligible for the visa on arrival system under the new pilot programme, the change marks an encouraging step toward a more visitor friendly Egypt.

As this initiative unfolds, travellers are advised to monitor official updates for details on nationality specific eligibility. Egypt’s effort to combine ancient wonders with modern hospitality is well underway, and its airports are now set to reflect that transformation.
