A Historic Moment for Bihar’s Connectivity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much awaited Purnea Airport on Monday marking a major step in enhancing connectivity in Bihar’s Seemanchal and Kosi regions. The inaugural event also saw the launch of a commercial flight from Purnea to Ahmedabad with another connecting to Kolkata later in the day. Ticket bookings for both flights had already been completed highlighting the strong demand. Future plans include expanding routes to Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai which is expected to transform mobility for lakhs of people in the state.
A Mega Package of Development Projects
Alongside the airport inauguration the Prime Minister launched and laid the foundation stone of projects worth nearly ₹36,000 crore covering multiple sectors. The list includes the Araria to Galgalia Thakurganj railway line worth ₹4,410 crore and the Vikramshila to Kataria rail line worth ₹2,170 crore. He flagged off three new trains including the Jogbani to Danapur Vande Bharat Express, Jogbani to Erode Amrit Bharat Express, and the Saharsa to Amritsar Amrit Bharat Express further strengthening Bihar’s railway network.
In Bhagalpur the Prime Minister launched a 2400 MW thermal power project worth ₹25,000 crore in Pirpaiti block which will play a critical role in meeting Bihar’s growing power needs. The ₹2,680 crore Kosi Mechi interstate river link project (Phase 1) was also inaugurated along with Namami Gange initiatives in Bhagalpur that include sewage treatment plants and water supply projects for Darbhanga, Katihar, and Bhagalpur.
Social Development and Employment Boost
Under the housing and social development initiatives the Prime Minister handed over keys to 40,920 families under the PM Awas Yojana homes built at a cost of ₹603 crore. A community investment fund worth ₹500 crore was distributed while the National Makhana Board was established to support Bihar’s traditional fox nut farmers. Additionally, a new semen bank facility in Purnea costing ₹64 crore was inaugurated to strengthen the state’s agriculture and dairy sector.
Officials have said these projects will usher in a new era of connectivity, employment, and social uplift particularly in the underdeveloped border districts of Seemanchal and Kosi. Improved rail and air connectivity combined with investments in power and housing are expected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate trade and tourism.
A Rally to Mark the Occasion
The Prime Minister also addressed a massive public rally at the Sheeshabadi SSB Camp Ground in Gulabbag Zero Mile, Purnea. The city had been decorated with banners and welcome gates while unprecedented security arrangements were made with more than 1,500 personnel deployed. Observers note that the timing of these announcements ahead of the Assembly polls carries significant political weight as well as developmental promise.

The inauguration of Purnea Airport combined with the launch of these large scale projects marks one of the most ambitious development packages Bihar has seen in recent years. With investments spread across infrastructure, housing, power, and agriculture, the state is poised for stronger connectivity and improved living standards for its people.
