Delhi is all set to offer a brand new experience for residents and tourists alike hot air balloon rides. The Delhi Development Authority has announced plans to begin the service at four designated locations, turning the idea of city exploration into something much more thrilling. If everything goes as planned, you could be floating above the Yamuna or the Commonwealth Games Complex by October this year.

A private agency has already been selected to manage and operate the balloon rides under a revenue-sharing arrangement. The DDA has ensured that all ticket revenues will be channeled directly into its accounts for complete transparency. The initiative is now entering its implementation stage and is expected to roll out in the next two months.

The chosen locations include Asita, a green expanse along the Yamuna River; Baansera Bamboo Park on the riverfront; the Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar; and the Commonwealth Games Sports Complex. These sites were carefully selected based on their open areas, ease of accessibility, and scenic surroundings. Each site will allocate about 3600 square metres for the balloon operations. These operations are planned with safety and space in mind, ensuring smooth lift-offs and landings.

The ride experience will allow passengers to soak in panoramic views of Delhi’s mix of urban sprawl, riverside greenery, and historical landmarks. Unlike mountain destinations or valleys where ballooning is common, Delhi will be one of the rare metro cities to offer this experience within its urban fabric. The initiative not only aims to bring leisure activities closer to city dwellers but also to boost tourism and weekend travel plans within the capital.

The initial contract with the operating agency is for three years, though it can be extended up to nine years depending on the success of the project. This will give the operators time to refine services, adapt to public demand, and improve infrastructure for an activity still new to Delhi’s tourism scene.

This is part of a larger project being rolled out by the Delhi Development Authority to rejuvenate and activate public spaces along the Yamuna riverfront. Alongside the balloon rides, a ferry service is also in development that will operate on a stretch between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. This river transport project is being developed in collaboration with the Inland Waterways Authority of India and various departments of the Delhi government. These combined efforts reflect a broader vision to reimagine how residents interact with the city’s neglected waterfront spaces.

As the DDA pushes to modernise and diversify Delhi’s recreational offerings, hot air balloon rides could soon become a signature experience in the capital. For photography lovers, adventure seekers, or even casual weekenders, this promises a peaceful yet spectacular way to see the city from above.
