A Landmark for Indian Sports
On September 16, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena laid the foundation stone for Delhi’s first international standard ice sports arena in Dwarka’s Sector 23. Spread across 4,200 square metres, the facility will include an Olympic size rink measuring 60 metres by 30 metres, the same dimensions used in global competitions across Europe and North America. Developed by the Delhi Development Authority under a public private partnership model, the arena is expected to change the way India looks at winter sports.
Why This Arena Matters
India has long struggled with a lack of infrastructure for winter sports, forcing athletes to travel abroad for serious training. With this upcoming facility, Delhi will provide year round access to a professional grade rink capable of hosting figure skating, ice hockey, curling, and more. Officials have described it as a future “Centre of Excellence,” where aspiring athletes can train to international standards and prepare for platforms like the Winter Olympics and Asian Winter Games.
Speaking at the foundation ceremony, Saxena highlighted the timing of the event, noting that it coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday. He described the project as a turning point for sports in India and a step that would open new opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest level.
Modern Facilities for All
The ice arena has been designed with both professionals and the public in mind. In addition to the rink, the complex will include amenities such as food and beverage outlets, a rehabilitation room, and a sports shop. This mix ensures that while professional teams can use the space for training and competitions, ordinary citizens can also enjoy recreational skating, making it an inclusive and world class destination.
The project is expected to be completed by May 2026, though officials have indicated that the construction timeline could be as short as nine to ten months. A private agency has been awarded the contract for fifteen years, taking responsibility for both construction and day to day operations.
Dwarka as a Sporting Hub
The choice of Dwarka is no coincidence. The sub city is rapidly positioning itself as a hub for sports and recreation, already boasting India’s longest 18 hole golf course and a Centre of Excellence in sports. Excellent connectivity through the Dwarka Expressway, Urban Extension Road, and the airport tunnel linking to Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport makes the location easily accessible.
For the Delhi Development Authority, which already manages multiple sports complexes and golf courses, this project represents another major step in reshaping the capital’s sporting landscape. Officials have emphasised that the arena will be both a serious training ground and a leisure destination, a combination that makes it unique in India.
A New Chapter for Delhi
For a city known for its scorching summers and fleeting winters, the arrival of an Olympic size rink is nothing short of extraordinary. It will not only allow Delhiites to experience winter sports in their own backyard but also put the capital at the centre of India’s winter sports journey. By the time the doors open in 2026, the arena promises to bring a new sense of excitement and opportunity, skating stride by stride into the future.
